I originally posted this on Facebook on Eclipse day (8/21/17), but it’s still something I can’t seem to get over. Our God is so exact… He blows my mind!
This has been on my mind for a few days. Per the Telegraph (and as many other sources as you want to seek out, I’m just quoting them), “The diameter of the Sun is 400 times that of the Moon but it lies 400 times further away – which means if you are in exactly the right alignment on the surface of the Earth at the right time, you will see the two celestial bodies overlap exactly.” It’s the “exactly right” that gets me. Any variation of distance or size would either destroy the chance of there ever being a total eclipse at all OR would so obliterate the sun that we’d miss the corona–the crown–and what gives an eclipse its ethereal beauty. “Exactly.” That didn’t happen by chance or circumstance. In a few hours, we get to see something that is a once in a lifetime event for us. And I have been thinking for days about my God. He could have done things any way He wanted. He didn’t have to give us anything here on this earth. (Shoot, he didn’t even have to put us here in the first place… or let us survive at all.) He could have dumped us on a dark, horrible void or filled the place with rancid goo. But we have trees, flowers, oceans and beauty. Amazing varieties of food. Incredible sunrises and sunsets. The list goes on and on. The grace is abundant and incredible. And sometimes He even picks those unbelievably rare moments to do something like He will do today… to line things up so perfectly that it becomes very, very, impossibly hard to deny that there is a Creator at work. “Exactly.” So no matter what you think this eclipse is all about or why it is happening, take a minute and think about the fact that God proves Himself to us over and over again. That He is always drawing us to Him, showing us He is real and He is incredible. And my most fervent prayer is this… that in this very rare moment somebody, somewhere, who doesn’t know Him already will have a holy, grace-filled moment with Him today.
