Sarah Sundin is the reason I don’t write historical fiction. Now, don’t go feeling sorry for me. I am perfectly happy right in my contemporary little world. When I read Sarah’s books, I know she put in some serious research time. The passion for her subject comes through, and the detail makes her books come to life. She’s got it down, even to the types of buckles on the straps of an airplane. I love that! You don’t necessarily notice it as you read, but when you put the book down, it adds to the “I’ve been there” feeling. I’m nowhere near that detailed and research-oriented. And that’s why I appreciate her books all the more!
I got to read her latest over the summer, On Distant Shores. Yeah, it’s been a long time since I reviewed a book. She sent me a book to review if I liked it, and boy, did I like it. She does it again with Georgie and Hutch’s story. I liked the characters, which is a feat, considering they are flawed human beings. They are not larger than life heroes. They have issues and, at times, one even borders on unlikeable. But it’s supposed to be that way, and it works because the foundation was laid. You’re still rooting for things to go the right way, even then.
Bottom line, I was on a time crunch and was sure I would never finish the book before I had to set it aside for my own deadline. I was wrong. I read it in three days. I was cooking and reading. Staying up late reading. Praying it would rain so I could read instead of mowing the grass. (Yes, Carolina, you can thank me for our drought-busting summer…)
Great book. Go get it. You won’t be sorry, but make sure you have a free weekend. You’re going to want the time.

Jodie – what a sweet – and humorous! – review. I’m so glad you enjoyed the book enough to pray down the rainwaters!
