(This is day two of the Rediscovering the Christmas Season Advent Study that can be found here. You don’t have to start at the beginning. In fact, you can jump in any time or go in any order. Care to join?)
Read Matthew 1.
What do you think Joseph was thinking when the angel showed up and told him about Jesus? This was a man on a roller coaster. He’s engaged to Mary, and back then, that was equal to marriage, minus the sharing a roof part. My first thing I wonder is what in the world he thought when she came up pregnant and said that God did it! There had to be some serious feeling of betrayal on his part, because he had no proof until that angel showed up. And then there had to be some shock and awe when the angel did arrive and let him in on what was going on. We are pretty used to the story by now, but for Joseph… There was no precedence for God having a virgin carry the Messiah. No woman had ever had a child by God before. He’d likely grown up expecting the Messiah for years, and you can bet he never thought he’d be personally involved in all of this!
How would you have felt if you were Joseph? I think I pretty much covered it. I wonder how many days it took him to grasp the situation… or if he ever grasped it at all? I’m amazed God entrusted me with our daughter. I’m amazed every time He gives me words to say to someone else. The fact that He’d trust me or talk to me is unbelievable. And Joseph found himself being entrusted by God to raise His Son? Whoa… I’m pretty sure my mind could never stretch enough to grasp that one.
Have you had an experience where God asked you to do something ridiculous? A better question might be have I not? I love the way that God delights in the you-have-to-be-kidding-me. He is all about the first being the last, turning the bad in the good, making sinners into saints… My God is completely, off the charts ridiculous… And I think it gives Him a good belly laugh sometimes. I think He enjoys knocking our socks off, asking something that makes us say, “Do what?!?” I love to think He shakes His head, smiles, and says, “Trust me. It’ll blow you away.”
Make a plan to do something ridiculous that you know God wants you to do.
