Hm. It’s Word Wednesday, the over 18 edition. This week we look at Song of Solomon. It’s kind of tough to be G-rated with Solomon, isn’t it? Seriously, though, I love this book. I love it on the earthly level, of the honest love and passion between man and woman. And I love it on a heavenly heaven, of Jesus’ love and passion for us. It’s so beautiful. Take the time to drop down to the comments below and share what spoke to you out of Song of Solomon. I’d love to hear from you!
Song of Solomon 6:3a (NAS)–I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.
Like I said, there’s an earthly level and a heavenly level here. Believe me, I adore my husband. We’ve been married 14 years and it still does something to my heart (and to my stomach–such butterflies!) to say we belong to each other. Ever thought about what that means? That gets to me in a way I can’t describe. Let me give you an example: He owns a Harley, and I enjoy riding with him. Occasionally, he’ll prop his elbow on my knee as we ride, and that is absolutely one of my favorite things in the world. Why? Because I know he would never, ever rest his elbow on anyone else’s knee. I’m his. He’s mine.
And on the heavenly level? Oh wow, that gets to me even more. I am God’s. And He is my God. I belong to the King of Kings. Oh, there aren’t words! I am owned by the Almighty, and He loves me more than I can fathom. My relationship with Him is not like your relationship with Him. Your relationship with Him is not like your neighbor’s relationship with Him. It is special and intimate and wonderful in its own way. How cool is that? We are His, and He allows us to say He is ours.
See? Beautiful.

I chose the same verse for the same reason, although I relate on an earthly level in a slightly different way (obviously!). WW isn’t the usual place for girl talk, but since our Panera days are over for now, I’ll go ahead and share. I’ve been kinda/sorta dating a guy since Christmas and we’re now at that place in our relationship where we’re trying to decide what we are… just friends or committed to more. I already loved this verse, but in light of the recent drama, I’m even more comforted by the fact that my relationship with God is completely void of questions (and doubts and fears and uncertainties…) than I was before! I’d rather belong to Him than “him” anyway.
Oh, and I love how this book lined up so well with V Day, too! God is so cool. 🙂

Oh my gosh! I just got to read this! You have so much to say to me!!! You owe me a serious email… or series of texts anyway. 🙂 Can’t wait to hear all about this.

I really struggled with this book. I struggle with poetry and imagery. I pulled out my application study bible and went back to the initial verse that stuck out to me.
Song of Songs 8:6-7 – Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.
I want to share what my study bible says…. “In this final description of their love, the girl includes some of its significant characteristics (see also 1 Corinthians 13). Love is as strong as death; it cannot be killed by time or disaster. Love is priceless; even the richest king cannot buy it. Love must be accepted as a gift from God and shared within the guidelines God proves. Accept the love of your spouse as God’s gift, and strive to make your love a reflection of God’s perfect love.”
I fall very short in my marriage all the time. I think most of us do at times anyway. I know that my husband and my love for each other is truly a gift from God, but I really like the reminder to strive to make my love for my spouse a reflection of God’s perfect love.

Oh my gosh, what your Bible said is beautiful!

It’s funny (or maybe that’s the wrong word), but I’ve never spent much time studying this book. I see it as an analogy talking of God’s love for his church and people, but of course recognize there are examples and admonitions applicable to our marriages, too. I don’t know what verse would be my favourite… will have to think on that a little longer (and do some more in-depth reading of it!).

I only recently started paying attention to this book, but I find I love it more each time I read it!
