I put a call out tonight because I didn’t know what to blog about. Within, oh, thirty seconds, my phone rang. It was a friend of mine who co-teaches a Bible study with me and her first words were, “DUDE! Blog about MY SONG!” (Monday, I will blog about the song.) Then she said, “Blog about my crazy Bible observations.” That’s when it hit me. It wasn’t my friend’s song I should blog about. It was my friend herself I should blog about. Well, not so much her as how she has affected my life.
Every Wednesday when I post a blog for Word Wednesday, she calls me and says, “I’m going to tell you the funny thing I found in the Bible, but then I’m going to blog about something serious.” Invariably, what she finds in the Bible cracks me up. (I have heard her use the insult, “Dude! You are totally unsandaled” since she read Deuteronomy 25:10.) But then she goes and blows me away with the serious comments she makes.
Why am I telling you this? Because she challenges me to look at the Bible in a new way. In her phone calls, she makes me see that yep, our God has a sense of humor. But in her serious posts, she never fails to look at a verse in a way I’ve never seen before. She’ll tell you that there are things she’s seeing for the first time, and her excitement over digging into the word makes me jealous for that kind of expectant joy.
I want to be more like that. To dig into the word expecting God to surprise me, delight me, and challenge me. And you know what? That’s my challenge to you. Look at the Bible through new eyes. Look at God through new eyes. You’ll be surprised by what He shows you.
